ISLAMABAD:

President Asif Ali Zardari approved on Tuesday the appointment of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Rana Sanaullah Khan as Advisor to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Political and Public Affairs.

The prime minister’s newly-appointed advisor on political and public affairs will have the status of a federal minister. The president approved Sanaullah’s appointment on the advice of the premier under Article 93 (a) of the Constitution.

The development comes as reports emerge detailing internal discord among PML-N leaders.

Tensions within the ruling party reached a boiling point when two senior party leaders, Rana Sanaullah and Javed Latif, engaged in a public spat over allegations of election rigging.

Rana Sanaullah threw shade at Javed Latif, branding him a “conspiracy theorist” for his allegations of widespread election rigging. Latif, in a riposte, dared Sanaullah to put his money where his mouth is, suggesting that if elections were truly fair, Sanaullah should step down as party president Punjab, owning up to his failure in the province.

Sanaullah had also urged PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif to resume leadership of the party once again. On Sunday, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, a trusted aide of Nawaz Sharif, was elevated to the position of deputy prime minister.
